Curl Burke Masters Swimmers,
Over the past several days and weeks, very serious allegations of sexual misconduct with minors by two Curl Burke Swim Club Coaches and Senior Managers have appeared in the press. USA Swimming has initiated their emergency investigation process into these allegations, and we will no doubt learn more in the days ahead. In the meantime, I provided the following information to all of our Curl Burke Masters Coaches this morning, and rather than wait until you can hear this from them at your next workout, I wanted to pass this same information along to each of you:
Curl Burke Masters Swimming Inc. is a completely separate swimming, legal and business entity from the Curl Burke Swim Club. Our club is part of U.S. Masters Swimming (USMS) which limits its membership, exclusively, to adults of age 18 and up.
Curl Burke Masters Swimming has shared a common name with the Curl Burke Swim Club. This same name derived from our original training location, Burke Racquet and Swim Club in Burke, Virginia, which was also a practice site of the Curl Burke Swim Club. Since it’s inception, our team has never been controlled, coached, managed, or operated by the Curl Burke Swim Club in any capacity. We have our own coaches who all have other part or full time jobs.
Our only business relationship to the Curl Burke Swim Club is at three of our sixteen training locations where we sublease our lanes for our adult training practices. In all other locations we directly lease our lane space ourselves, except for our one private club location where our swimmers at that location all belong to the Club and therefore are not charged lane rentals (BRSC).
We have been in discussions with another Masters Club in Northern Virginia, Fairfax County Masters who trains at two of our same locations, for some time. Just two months ago, we agreed to merge our teams and operations beginning on January 1, 2013. As part of this merger, we were already contemplating a name change for our combined team. In light of the recent events associated with the Curl Burke Swim Club, we will now accelerate this name change rather than wait until January 1. The Potomac Valley Local Masters Swimming Committee (LMSC), our regional organization under USMS, is already investigating the procedures to facilitate our Club name change now, rather than wait until the end of the calendar year as customary.
In the meantime, all of our locations and lane space and coaching staff look secure. We are working towards a single quarterly dues and punch pass system that will allow you to swim any workout at nearly all of our locations. This is exciting news and we hope to have it ready to go by the start of the fall/winter/spring season at Labor Day. I will keep you posted of any noteworthy changes, including our new name!
Should you have any additional questions regarding our team, including our near and long term direction, please feel free to talk to your site lead coach, or to email or call me anytime.
I hope you have a great weekend and can find some time to watch how the USA fares in swimming and other events over the next two weeks!
Best, Frank Marcinkowski
